If you’re planning a summer road trip with your family, you might want to load up on apps—not just for your kids—but for you too. This short list of iPhone apps will be helpful for tech savvy moms and dads that want to make their road trip travel experiences more fun (and efficient).

SitOrSquat: Bathroom Finder
Price: Free

download on itunes
Does little Susie gotta go? SitOrSquat helps you find clean bathrooms (and changing tables). This app not only shows you a map of rated bathrooms around you, but gives you pictures too. Great for avoiding bathrooms as much as finding them! Note: This app has an “Open Now” feature.

Roadside America
Price: $2.99

download on itunes

The fact that you don’t have access to the entire U.S. unless you spend more money ($5.99) is pretty lame. But it has some fantastically weird and helpful features that you could get pretty addicted to. In addition to locating and mapping out all the totally weird places, museums and odd statues in the U.S. your kids will be laughing at for years—Roadside America also helps parents with a sunset alarm so you don’t miss that crucial family photo. I like that some of the attractions have photos you can look at ahead of time – saving you a lengthy drive for something your kids might consider a dud. Another favorite tool is the “Touristus Interruptus” that sends you a call in case you’re stuck in a boring museum!

iGot Shotgun
Price: $0.99

download on itunes
Do your kids fight over the front seat? This app is a must-have if you are tired of choosing between your children or listening to them grapple for the coveted front seat. iGot Shotgun decides for them! Just add the names of the riders and shake your iPhone. Use best out of five (or seven) if you want to add some drama to the decision.

Route 66: Road Trip Fun
Price: $0.99

download on itunes
There’s no need for your kids to watch DVDs or play with the iPad the entire road trip. Don’t you remember how much fun it was to play license plate games and punch buggy when you were a kid? Road Trip Fun gives moms and dads a quick reminder how to play several road trip games. It’s more of an easy to read instruction booklet – but don’t worry, they truly are quick and easy to play.

Note: The app icon says Route 66 but you can’t find it by searching the iTunes store for Route 66. Instead, type in Road Trip Fun to find the app.

Mom Maps
Price: Free

download on itunes
Find parks, restaurants, indoor playgrounds, museums, and other helpful places moms and dads need wen on the road. But note that they’re building this guide city by city. So far they have San Francisco Bay Area, Philadelphia, New York City, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Portland, Boise, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Salt Lake City, Cincinnati, Albuquerque,  Maui  – new destinations being added all the time. Note: This guide will only be as good as we help make it. Sign on and add your favorite kid friendly locations.

I downloaded the TV Everywhere application with DISH Network to my Iphone. I work for DISH and this product is awesome. The application was easy and free and I can access my TV and my DVR recordings on my Iphone. The kids enjoy it while we are in the car. They can watch all their favorite shows from anywhere.
